Anticipation Activity #1- Comprehension RIT.1.6. Distinguish between information provided by pictures or other illustrations and information provided by the words in a text.
Before reading Miss Nelson is Missing I would take a picture walk through the book with the class. Using the web 2.0 tool smilebox we would look at the pictures in the story and make predictions about what happens as we go along. I would allow each student a chance to share what they are thinking and not just call on one student. I would also make it known at this point that anything the students say is acceptable. We do not know anything about the story, we can make good guesses and then read to find out if we are correct. The picture walk will give the students a chance to focus on the pictures and give them an idea of what the story is about. It also opens up their minds and allows them to be creative.
Activity #2- Vocabulary RIT.1.4. Ask and answer questions to help determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases in a text.
I would have some words picked out that I think that students will not know what they mean and have the words and definitions on quizlet.com. Before the story I would pull up the cards made on quizlet.com. One side of the card contains the word, the other side the definition. To start out I would ask if any student knows how to pronounce the word. We would work together to sound it out and say it correctly. Next I would see if anyone knows what the words means. After we have made our guesses I would show them the definition. Finally as a class we would come up with a sentence that uses the word correctly in a sentence. I would call on different students to read each word and definition to be fair and allow students to practice reading in front of others and their fluency. I would send home a note with the students so they can access these words at home and practice them. To access the cards, the username is kelsabelse and the password is nelson. If they look under “my recent sets” they will see one called Miss Nelson is Missing, if they click on that they will be taken right there. http://quizlet.com/3447707/miss-nelson-is-missing-flash-cards/
Activity #3- Comprehension RIT.1.7. Use the illustrations and details in a text to describe its key ideas.
I will have the students get in pairs and talk about what they think the story will be about since we have already looked at the pictures and looked at the vocabulary words that will be used in the story. After they have discussed for a few minutes I will bring us back as a whole class and we will talk about the questions listed below. I will also allow the students to ask questions that they have and see if anyone knows the answer. Do you think the students like Miss Nelson? Why? How do the students behave? Is this some place you would want to go to school? Who is the lady in the black dress?
Assessment
I will observe the students and look for participation, and see how they work together, and to make sure that they are on task. I will want them to participate and to answer questions that I have, as well as ones their classmates might have.
Building Knowledge Activity #1- Comprehension RIT.1.2. Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text.
I will read the story to the class. After the story has been read I will talk to them about the story and what happened, to try and get them thinking of some ideas to use when filling out the story map. Then they will fill out a story map, what happened in the beginning, middle and the end of the story. I will provide each student with a copy of the book so they can refer to it if needed. After they have finished filling in the map they can share with the class what they put and thought were the most important points of the story. I will collect the story maps to make sure that each student understood what happened and did not just say they had the same things written as other people.
Activity #2- Fluency RFS.1.4. Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
While reading Miss Nelson is Missing the students will see that in the story the students missed Miss Nelson and wanted her to come back. I will make a voicethread for students to leave comments on how they would feel if their teacher was missing, and what they would do to try and find her. The voicethread will allow the students to listen to other students comments and compare what was said to their ideas. http://voicethread.com/share/1539161/
Activity #3- Comprehension RL.1. 9. Compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in stories.
I will have the students brainstorm things that Miss Nelson could have done instead of disguising herself as someone else. I would ask the students if they think Miss Nelson made the right decision by what she did, or if she would have been better using one of the ideas that we came up with. This will allow the students to use their creativity and imaginations to come up with ideas. Using kidspiration we will create a list and see all the different places that she could be.
I will review the voicethreads and look for complete thoughts, as well as them speaking fluently. I will check to make sure that they have written down the details we came up with for the story map in a notebook. I will also check the kidspiration charts to make sure they have some good ideas and were creative.
Consolidation Actvity #1- Comprehension RL.1.2. Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.
To end the book we would use Mindmeister and create a detailed story map. This will include the events that happened not just in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. This would be done after activity 2A. Activity 2A would allow us a good place to start and this will help us to develop those ideas more and piece the story back together. I would do this activity in the classroom as a whole group activity and depending on the class size either have each student say something that happened or partner the students and let them talk for a bit about a detail that they would like to share with the class. This will allow me to see what they students understand and how they reflect. To access the map at home the students can long on to mindmeister using the username reading and the password concordia.
Activity #2- Comprehension W.1. 5. With guidance and support from adults, focus on a topic, respond to questions and suggestions from peers, and add details to strengthen writing as needed.
I would have the students think about why the students in the story liked Miss Nelson so much. Then, I would have them write about their favorite teacher and how they would feel if that teacher were to suddenly disappear. This will help them to understand how the students felt when Miss Nelson was missing. We would take a trip to the computer lab and all students would start writing in a blank document. After I have read over each students work I would assist them in copying what they wrote to the writeboard page. The password is reading. http://123.writeboard.com/tivg3osu8c40bxh1
Activity #3- Comprehension SL.1.1. Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
I will split the class into pairs and have them share what they first thought the book would be about with their partners. Then they would go into talking about which predictions they made that were right and which ones were wrong. They can also come up with any questions that they have still, or any that did not get answered that were previously asked. We will come back together as a whole class and share some of the things we talked about in our small groups and work together to answer any questions and make sure that we all understand.
Assessment
I will look at the writeboard assignment. The students should have well thought out reflections, and some connections to the story too. I will make sure that all questions are answered. I will observe participation as they work in partners to talk about the story. Participation in whole group activities will also be looked at, when going over the mindmeister map, and when talking as a whole group at the end of activity 3.
